Fairytale Comparison with 'M' Fritz Lang (1931)

Delving into the roots of cinema and the power of montage editing, 'M' provokes a stressing emotional response from the cinematography in the opening sequence. Many of the empty shots of the staircase and dinner table suggest the daughter Elsee has been murdered by the shadowed figure of the town. When comparing the events within this opening, there is a clear relationship between the conventions of a fairtale; in this case 'Little Red Ridinghood'. I decided to take a still frame from the mother, who's in this case an innocent character, and make her into a rabbit. The idea behind this was to establish the characters by using animals and understanding the conventional ideas behind semiotics in good and evil characters.
